Why Confidence Takes Courage?

Dec 04, 2024

Sometimes, kids want to try something new, but that little voice in their head tells them they can't do it or that it’s just too hard. Before they even begin, they start doubting themselves, and that feeling can quickly take over. This is where courage comes in—it’s a big part of building A Confident Mindset™. Without courage, it’s easy to give up before even trying.

But why does confidence require courage? Courage is the starting point—it’s the first step on the journey to becoming confident. At A Confident Mindset™, we guide all well-meaning adults on how to encourage children to have courage, helping them begin their journey to confidence and grow into strong, confident individuals.

What is Courage?
Being courageous doesn’t mean kids are without fear—it means they know there is a risk involved and yet they are willing to face their fears and embrace new opportunities.
Our goal as well-meaning adults is to encourage them to trust in their abilities and help them understand that they don’t have to be confident right away–they can become confident over time.

Why Confidence Takes Courage?
Different factors play a role in developing confidence, including environment, friends, health, experiences, well-being, courage, commitment, and practice. Kids need to stay consistent in their efforts to develop confidence—it’s all about staying committed to practice and not giving up. The saying ‘courage over confidence’ reminds us that courage is what drives them forward. While confidence shapes how kids act and present themselves, courage is the spark that gets them moving in the first place. By encouraging them to have courage and take action, we empower them to develop the confidence that shapes who they are and how they face challenges.

With practice comes experience, and that experience allows them to reflect and grow. Over time, their actions turn into habits. Confidence is a journey of growth, empowering them to face their fears and turn those fears into successes.

How Do You Become More Courageous?
Fear can hold you back from opportunities, and that’s where A Confident Mindset™ comes in! Developing courage is a 2-step process–believe in yourself and face fears.

Step 1: Believe in Yourself
Believing in yourself means having faith in your own abilities–it means having the awareness and knowledge that your abilities are valuable.
To help a child develop this belief, it’s important for them first to identify their strengths and areas of growth. For many children, acknowledging their areas of growth can be challenging. They may fear ridicule or worry about being laughed at. In these moments, remind them that they have a support system surrounding them. Let them know that everyone has areas they're working on—not just them—and that growth is a natural part of learning and developing.

Step 2: Face Fears
As previously mentioned, fear doesn't mean a child isn't confident—it's part of the process of becoming confident. It’s important to help them understand that fear is normal, but with coping strategies, they can face it. Fear comes from dangerous situations, while nervousness is about uncertainty, like before a big test or performance. Both feelings can help keep us safe, but nervousness can also prevent action.

The key is helping children identify their fear and use it as an opportunity to act, which builds confidence. With the right coping strategies, they can face fears, even if they don’t completely overcome them.

Conclusion
In conclusion, courage is the first step on the journey to becoming confident. It’s not about being fearless but about knowing there is a risk involved and yet still embracing new opportunities.
At A Confident Mindset™, we are dedicated to guiding both kids and well-meaning adults through the journey of developing unstoppable confidence. Whether you’re just starting or facing challenges along the way, we’re here to support you toward a more confident future!
